How do you know if you’re an Introvert?
I knew very early on in life I was different than most everyone else.
People said I was “shy,” “quiet,” and “timid,” and I was often teased about it.
I felt like no matter what I did, I never fit in.
Introvert Life as a Kid
I always wished I had tons of friends, but most all of my life I’ve had just a small circle of a few meaningful friendships. Some seasons of my life I had literally one or two besties.
The Middle School lunchroom for me was one of the most awkward and uncomfortable times I remember.
We got to choose where we wanted to sit, which means most kids sat with their groups of friends.
The problem with that is if you had none, like me. I often ended up eating at the lunch table with all the kids who didn’t fit in either.
All of us just sat there awkwardly eating our bag or hot lunch. Barely making eye contact with each other, chatting about boys, teachers, our parents and siblings (me, mostly listening).
I’m an introvert… I love being by myself, love being outdoors, love taking a long walk with my dogs and looking at the trees, flowers, the sky.

I couldn’t wait to spend the remainder of my lunch in the school library reading books. My safe haven.
I’d immediately breathe a sigh of relief as soon as I sat at a tiny table with only enough space for me.
This is where my love for books really fleshed out a lot. I’d much rather read a book alone in the quiet library, than sit in the lunchroom for a full hour talking (and in my case, not talking).

Introvert Adulting
Now as an adult who pretty much fully understands who I am, and why I’m the way I am, I can confidently say I’m a Highly Sensitive Empathic Introvert.
It’s kind of a loaded statement, but getting an understanding of all of this has helped me in ways I never thought possible.
I spent so many years in the dark, only knowing my personality was probably just genetics. But not having any explanation or information on how to cope.
