How do Introverts Act?

“But she acts nothing like an Introvert. People are really taking the definition of introvert to another meaning.”

This is a comment someone posted on one of my viral introvert videos.

I think it’s so important to be aware that people really do believe every Introvert is supposed to act a certain way.

This is just not true!

What is the definition of an Introvert?

One of the comments this person made also involved asking what people thought the definition of “Introvert” actually is?

According to Meriam-Webster, an introvert is a person whose personality is characterized by introversion : a typically reserved or quiet person who tends to be introspective and enjoys spending time alone.

But check out these extended parts of their definition:

//… introverts gain energy through solitude and quiet.
— Bill Howatt
//His research further shows that about 70% of top executives are introverts.
— Linda Grant
//Bill Gates is quiet and bookish, but apparently unfazed by others’ opinions of him: he’s an introvert, but not shy.
— Steven Aitchison
NOTE: Introverts are typically more comfortable interacting with small groups of people rather than large groups (as at parties). The psychologist Carl Gustav Jung first introduced the terms introvert, introversion, extrovert, and extroversion in the early 1900s to describe personality types that focus a person’s energy on either the inner or outer world. The terms introvert and extrovert have since become widely popularized, with introvert often broadly used to mean “a quiet or shy person.”

… she was, by other accounts, a “shy sensitive introvert” who was “afraid of people and felt most comfortable when she could shut the door and withdraw.”
— Robert R. Harris

Now I know for a fact the last time I looked up the definition of introvert, NONE of these extended definitions where there!

Wow, very interesting.

It’s great that finally there’s beginning to be a wider understanding of what it means to be an Introvert.

The Introvert Community Got Her Together!

Now on to those responses where people really got this commenter together!

I was surprised at the responses, but at the same time I wasn’t, if that makes sense. Because when you know, you know.

Introverts be introvertin.’ When this is the life you live every day, it’s easy to speak on it.

I did one video response to this comment, and my followers did the rest!

Introvert Community Comments About How Introverts Act

Just so you don’t have to scroll up, here’s the initial comment: “But she acts nothing like an Introvert. People are really taking the definition of introvert to another meaning.”

And here are the responses:

  • Introvert doesn’t mean being shy and passive 24/7, it’s about comfort, self awareness, few friendships, retreat to recharge and needing quietness to reflect.
  • Introverts can have extrovert qualities.  We can be social but need alone time to recharge our batteries.
  • Many people think of introverts as shy, but the two aren’t linked.  Introversion is a personality type, while shyness is an emotion.
  • Introverts are not a monolith ma’am. They don’t look a type of way.
  • We are not shy or weak we just don’t like being around humans, we enjoy our company.
  • We are extroverted around the right people.
  • Introverts do talk, but they don’t like crowds. They prefer staying at home.

These two comments were my immediate thought, but I didn’t even have to say it!

  • That’s how we introverts are. She’s in her car by herself, she’s not telling everyone face to face.
  • She’s talking to a camera not you.

And they continued to educate:

  • Soooo, what does an introvert act like??
  • Not all introverts act the same. Or maybe she’s a good actress.
  • I hate when people do that. Like it’s a trend but I don’t think that’s what she’s doing.
  • Shyness doesn’t equate being an introvert, do more research.
  • So you think introverts are just quiet weird people?
  • You sound like you mean introverts can’t be actors.

I mean they said it all didn’t they?? Woop woop!

We’re out here educating the masses, spreading awareness, and I love it!
