Help for First Time Moms Postpartum
If you’re a first time Mom, there are some things you may not know about your postpartum journey. Not to worry though, I’m here with some post pregnancy help just for you!
I didn’t always have this insight. In fact, after having my first (and only, so far) baby, I was pretty clueless about life after baby. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I knew the basics of how to care for my new baby.
I just didn’t know how to care for me. I didn’t know what I’d need postpartum, during what they also call, your 4th Trimester.
How I Discovered I Needed Postpartum Help
Me and my new baby were home alone and I’d just finished feeding him. I was in desperate need of a nice hot relaxing shower, so I did what any new Mommy would do.
I grabbed his bouncy seat and set it in the middle of the bathroom floor. I then picked him him up and set him in the seat with a couple of his favorite toys.
I turned on the shower, but only to lukewarm so as not to hinder my baby’s breathing. Then once I got in, I only closed the curtain just enough to where the water didn’t spill over onto the floor. And the entire time I showered, my eyes barely left my baby.
I was so constantly worried something would happen to him. These were some of the fastest, coldest showers I’ve ever had. But there was just no way I’d take my eyes off my baby.
So when my Aunt Lauren asked me if I’d like her to come over so she could watch the baby, and I could shower and take a nap, it was the answer to a prayer I didn’t even pray. I never mentioned to her that this was something I needed. But because she’d been there before, with two children of her own, she knew I’d need it.
I just didn’t know.
I tried to prepare the best I could, or so I thought. I’d read books in preparation for my baby’s arrival, but I just didn’t really know what to expect after he arrived.
I knew what my baby would need. But I didn’t know what I’d need.
I needed help.
Finding Solace on Your Postpartum Journey
There’s just something about hearing someone else’s story that helps to bring you comfort. It makes you feel like you’re not completely alone.
I’d call my Mom and ask her questions. She’d give me the answer and if she didn’t have it, she’d say call this Aunt she’s been through that. Or I’d speak to my dear sister-friends who’d been through various postpartum situations.
I was so thankful for them and for their words of wisdom and comfort.
Lean on your loved ones during this time, especially those whom you know have gone through pregnancy. It will make you feel so much better to talk to someone who’s been where you are now.
You’re a First Time Mom – Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself
It’s all new! You’re a newbie to all this, so please don’t be too hard on yourself.
As you ease into this time, try to be patient with yourself. You’ve just gained a completely new role. Not only are you daughter, sister, aunt, friend, wife, you’re now a Mom!
It really is a lot. I’m not even gonna sugarcoat it. You now have the responsibility of a whole human being on your (and your Husband/Partner’s) hands.
Don’t let it weigh you down. You’re likely (and hopefully) not completely alone in this.
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and it’s so true. Lean on your village.
If you feel you don’t have a village during your 4th Trimester, please look into some support groups, whether in person or online. There are lots of them available these days, try to take advantage of them!
